What are your goals, when it comes to working out or exercising? Do you want to look like a world glass bodybuilder, a chiseled Greek God, a fitness instructor, or just look good in a bathing suit? Your goal will determine the workout or exercise program that you will need. However, there are elements that apply to both categories and you will have to incorporate them into your programs. They are;
1. Diet
2. Exercise
3. Sleep
These are not placed in any order of importance, but all are required to reach your goals. We have all seen the guy that has huge muscles, and a gut to go with it. If you looked at his workout it would be good, his sleep would be good, but his diet was more than likely out of wack. A majority of people that are really in to working out are also into their diet, some more extreme than others, but none the less they take great care in dealing with their food intake.
In the same token, I have seen guys that don’t seem to work out a lot, but get great results, and guy’s that are constantly working out and have strength, but no size. This is where most guys shake their heads and blame it on genetics. You will notice that nowhere on my list do you see genetics. There are two reasons for its omission, first genetics we have no control over, and secondly Diet, Exercise and Sleep have more to do with building or sculpting your body than genetics. A one fits all work out or exercise routine will never work, we are all different, different body styles, muscle types, and different levels of fitness. You must first learn the basics of how the body works, what movement utilize what muscles or muscle groups. What exercises or type of lifting effects these muscles directly or indirectly. Then the amount of sets and repetitions are needed to work the muscles to their maximum. Once you start working out of lifting you must constantly monitor your body and change your routine to fine tune your results. As with dieting, exercise is also a life style change, it takes time, energy and consistency to produce results.
Although sleep would seem to be the easiest of these to accomplish, and is the one that is most often overlooked. Our bodies need sleep to repair and regenerate the mind and the body. Without the proper rest our bodies will fall into disrepair and our minds will soon follow. I worked shift work for the majority of my adult life, it did not take me long to figure out how important sleep was. I worked from 10:00pm to 6:00 am, I went directly home after work and was in bed by 7:00am and would get up between 2:00 and 3:00pm. I found that before I would get off work I was dead tired, then it dawned on me, if the regular person got up eight hours before going to work they would be dead on their feet before the end of their work day. The second thing I realized was that I could not keep adjusting my sleep between the work week and my days off. I ended up setting up a routine of going to bed around 10:00am, getting up a little after 6:00 pm and carried this schedule into my days off. True it was a little drastic, but it worked, I felt great and didn’t feel constantly tired or sleepy.
My sleep schedule was a life style change, and just like Diet and Exercise, to be successful requires a Life Style Change.
